FSW Respite [Top of Page]
What Is Respite? Respite is a break from the continuous tasks and pressures of caring for a child with serious emotional and behavioral challenges. It can take a number of
forms but each is based on the premise that by having periods of relief, a family is better able to cope with the intense day to day demands of living with a special needs child. At its best, respite
can provide time-out for the caregiver, recreation/socialization for the child, as well as a fall-back plan in case of crisis.
Family Service of Westchester Respite Program provides a range of respite services that attempt to give a break to the family while also providing opportunities for the children to form therapeutic
relationships. By supplementing the services available through children's case management programs as well as the Family Ties parent support groups, the Respite Program assists in developing a respite
plan that is individualized to meet the needs of the child and family drawing on whatever natural supports are available and supplementing with the services outlined below.
